Indian declaration/affidavit forms supplied by the Indian Embassy in Wellington requiring our signatures are an insult to our integrity as a sovereign nation as they do not comply with our required formats for either declarations or affidavits. When presented with these forms I feel like rejecting them outright but feel sorry for the clients as they are the ones who would suffer as a consequence.
The worst form presented to me is the form accompanying the application to renounce Indian citizenship - Form XVII “Declaration of Renunciation”.
The following is the wording on the form:
I ______ Residing at ________ Am at my full capacity and was born at _____ on ____ .
I have/have not been married
I am citizen/national of ________ under the law of this Country. I hereby renounce my citizenship of India.
I, _________ do solemnly and sincerely declare that the forgoing particulars stated in this declaration are true, and I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true.

Signature (In the case of a minor both parents must sign)
At the bottom of the form there is a note that the form if not presented in person must be attested to by a JP and in the case of a minor must be signed by both parents.
The client presenting me this form was the father of the person under 18 declaring the renunciation. The child's name and details were filled in and his name was also entered in the declaration section. The form was pre-signed by both parents.
This form appears to be designed to confuse.
An example: If the renunciation was for a person under 18 the person would not be “. . of my full capacity.”
The names of the two parents would need to be in the declaration portion and they would both need to appear before me to sign the declaration.
In the circumstances I declined signing the declaration which caused the client to get quite upset and angry. I sympathised with him as it was not his fault that he had to fill out such a confusing form.
Were it not the fact that such action would cause considerable inconvenience to the people using these Indian forms I consider the the National Federation should advise the Indian Embassy that JPs will no longer accept their forms in their current format.
